Types of Termites and How They Each Impact Your Home

Termites wreak havoc on the integrity of architectural structures all over the world, but different species of termites attack homes and businesses in different ways. To learn about three groups of termites that pose a threat to your home and why you may need to hire a termite control service, keep reading:

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites live in dry wood. Instead of absorbing their moisture from contact with moist ground soil, drywood termites get their moisture from the air. For this reason, they thrive in the humidity and are most commonly found chomping on the wooden foundation of coastal homes and businesses. Their presence can be detected by the clean and smooth bits of wood they leave behind.

Subterranean Termites

In recent years, western subterranean termites have caused an abundance of property damage in Southern California. Their presence is characterized by honeycombing. Subterranean termites nest in soil, living off of the moisture it provides. Because of this, they can feed on your home or office building for months or even years before being detected. It is smart to hire a pest control professional to inspect your property regularly, as he or she can check for the most subtle signs of subterranean termite presence.

Dampwood Termites

A preference for cool, humid areas makes dampwood termites partial to the Pacific Northwest. Dampwood termites do not typically infest homes, but if you have a mountain home that receives considerably heavy rainfall, your home could be at risk for infestation.

To prevent termites from invading your Los Angeles home, hire a dependable and experienced exterminator to inspect and treat your home for termites on a regular basis. Call Payne Pest Management at (818) 574-7889 to find out more about our termite control and other highly effective pest management services.

What to Look For When Hiring a Pest Control Company

Hiring a pest control company is something that every responsible homeowner should do. Even if your property is not prone to pest infestation, you should commission a pest control professional to annually inspect the foundation of your home for termite damage. To ensure that you are will be satisfied with the pest control company you choose, look for the following qualities when searching for an exterminator:

Established Reputation

Ask your friends and coworkers if they are happy with their pest control companies, and back up your word-of-mouth discoveries with your own research. Find a company whose employees have years of experience working in the pest control industry so that you know you will receive effective pest management from your exterminator.

Full Range of Pest Control Services

Even if your current pest control problems are confined to one type of pest, you should hire a company with a broad range of services. This way, you do not have to search for a new company if another type of pest decides to take up residence in your home or garden.

Straightforward Service Agreement

Before you hire an exterminator, come to a clear agreement with the company about what services they will provide and for how long. Be sure to get this in writing.

Coverage Guarantee

If you pay someone to regularly inspect and treat your home for termites, and termites damage your home’s foundation during that treatment period, you should not be held financially responsible for that damage. Choose a company that cannot change the terms of your guarantee unless you fail to make your premium payments.

Competent Billing Team

To avoid unnecessary hassle on your behalf, choose an exterminating team with an office that issues invoices immediately and makes payment simple.

Are you a Los Angeles property owner who is looking to hire a pest control company that boasts each of the qualities described above? If so, look no further than Payne Pest Management. To find out more about our full range of pest control services, call (818) 5744-7889 today.

Check Out Payne Pest Management's Feature in Fumigation Update:

The larger the square footage, the tougher it is to rid the space of whatever is inhabiting it. If it’s a group of people, simply ask them to leave; but if it’s a pest known as the termite, asking nicely might not just do the trick, especially in a 4-million-cubic-foot building. Well that’s exactly what Payne Pest Management did.

Using the California Aeration Plan, also known as the CAP, and Vikane gas fumigant, Payne Pest Management took on the feat of trying to fumigate the Coronado Point condominium complex. Fumigation Update covers the process behind this massive project and talks with Payne Pest Management to find out exactly how everything went down.

In the 8-page feature in Fumigation Update, Willie Payne says “damage created by the termites led to fungus damage... [which] created mold,” meaning it was crucial that the problem be addressed at its source – the termites.

The residents of Coronado Point raised concerns about a fumigation of this size and Jason Payne, VP of operations for Payne Pest Management, held a meeting of all the homeowners to address any questions or concerns the residents may have had about how this termite fumigation was going to affect them.

As pictured below, custom covers and tarps were put over the condos to keep everything inside dry and safe. A crew of almost 60 workers completed this job in two days. This was the largest fumigation job done under CAP for Payne Pest Management and the secondary contracting company, Statewide Fumigation.

While fumigations require people to stay clear of their homes for a short amount of time, they are the best option for getting rid of the problem at the source and ensuring that the termites or any other best don’t return.
